The Company You Keep: Trump Cabinet Opposes LGBT Rights

by | Nov 30, 2016 | Politics

Donald Trump’s new cabinet speaks volumes about his stance on LGBTQ+ rights. Every selection thus far has been a leader opposing LGBTQ+ rights. He seduced LGBTQ+ voters midway through the election promises of support, or at least neutrality, and held up Gays for Trump signs at his rallies, but actions speak louder than words.

Here is the LGBTQ+ State of Affairs in regards to Donald Trump’s Cabinet.

Jeff Sessions – Attorney General

Sessions has an abysmal record on LGBT Rights, so bad he’s at the top of our list.

He voted for a Constitutional ban on marriage equality.

Spoke in opposition to the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling in Obergefell.

Voted against the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA)

He’s a cosponsor of the so-called First Amendment Defense Act (FADA), legislation that could allow Kim Davis-style discrimination against LGBTQ people across the nation.

Voted against both the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act and expanding hate crimes to include sexual orientation, gender, and disability.

He voted against repealing “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.”

He opposed the Voting Rights Act.

Voted against reauthorizing the Violence Against Women Act.

He opposes immigration reform and has been on the wrong side of every civil rights issue in his long political career. Sessions received a zero on HRC’s congressional scorecard, and the ACLU characterizes his voting record as anti-civil rights.

Of all the people in the world that could have filled this role, Jeff Sessions may be the worst choice.

Tom Price – Secretary of Health and Human Services

Tom Price is clearly, outspokenly, diametrically opposed to LGBT health and happiness.

He has a string of zeroes on the Human Rights Campaign’s Congressional Scorecard for opposing LGBT rights.

He called the Supreme Court’s 2015 marriage equality decision “a sad day for marriage.”

“Today’s ruling by the Supreme Court serves only as further encouragement to use the court system as a systematic springboard to enact agendas outside the democratic and legislative structures of government. Thirty States have held statewide ballots banning gay marriage since the year 2000, and yet legislating from the bench has superseded both public approval and our elected representatives. This is not only a sad day for marriage but a further judicial destruction of our entire system of checks and balances.”

He supported a constitutional amendment to ban same-sex marriage.

He voted against the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd, Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act.

Mike Pence – Vice President

Mike Pence has so consistently opposed LGBT rights, he leaves no question as to his future plans with the office of the Vice President. Some of the other cabinet members may have acted several times against the LGBT Community, but Mike Pence has taken every opportunity, doubled down, and created new legislation to take rights away from LGBT Citizens.

In 2015, for his “license to discriminate” would have allowed businesses to deny service to LGBT people. He continued to defend the bill despite outcries from Hoosiers, LGBT and Non-LGBT alike. In a notorious interview with ABC last year, Pence refused to answer eight separate times when asked if businesses should discriminate against LGBTQ people.

As a Congressman, he voted against the Employment Non-Discrimination Act.

He voted against the repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell”.

He voted against the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act, after calling it a “radical social agenda.”

Quoted as saying, “Like many Hoosiers, I believe marriage is the union between one man and one woman…” there is no question Mike Pence opposes all our freedoms.

Pence opposed the Department of Education’s effort to clarify that transgender students have a right under Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 to access restrooms consistent with their gender identity. He was quoted as saying, “The federal government has no business getting involved in issues of this nature.”

In 2000, Pence wanted to cut funding for HIV prevention and redirect the funds toward those institutions which provide assistance to those seeking to “change their sexual behavior.”

Betsy DeVos – Secretary of Education

The DeVos family, including Betsy has a long record of donating to anti-LGBTQ causes and organizations.

Her family has given more than $6.7 million to the anti-LGBTQ group Focus on the Family since 1998. Focus on the Family promotes the harmful and discredited practice of so-called “ex-gay” conversion therapy and has accused anti-bullying programs in schools of “promoting homosexuality.”

She donated $200,000 in a successful bid to add an anti-gay marriage amendment to the Michigan ballot.

With a record like that and her depressingly slim resume, Betsy is a wild-card.

Reine Preibus – White House Chief of Staff

Guess what the Human Rights Campaign gives the current Chairman of the Republican National Committee, Reince Preibus?

—0—

I bet you guessed.

Throughout his time as RNC Chair Reince has continually defended the GOP’s hateful, and discriminatory stances on LGBT rights. Lying on several occasions about the GOP’s attack on LGBT citizens, most recently about the Anti-LGBT 2016 Platform.

That platform — which Reince oversaw — lays out opposition to marriage equality, supports adoption organizations that refuse to serve same-sex couples, vigorously endorses the anti-LGBTQ First Amendment Defense Act, includes affirming language about so-called “conversion therapy,” and calls for legislation to prevent transgender people from using public accommodations that align with their gender identity.

Michael Flynn – National Security Advisor

“Too often, way too often, our troops are instead are distracted by trivial matters, trivial matters about what words to use, what terminology is politically correct and what bathroom door to open up.”

“My God, war is not about bathrooms. War is not about political correctness or words that are meaningless.”

Enough Said.

Nikki Haley – Ambassador to the U.N.

Another one? Really? Ok, let’s do this.

As Governor of South Carolina, Nikki Haley defended her states unconstitutional ban on same-sex weddings, amid a lawsuit at the supreme court.

“The citizens of South Carolina spoke – they spoke something that I, too, believe, which is marriage should between a man and a woman. I’m going to stand by the people of this state, stand by the constitution, I’m going to support it and fight for it every step of the way.”

Recently Nikki has begun to take a gentler, more subversive approach to spreading bigotry, opting for coded phrases that are meant to soothe, and calm her constituency.

“If we held the White House, we would respect differences in modern families, but we would also insist on respect for religious liberty as a cornerstone of our democracy.”

Her state, of course, continues to deny anti-discrimination protections, and she hasn’t lifted a finger to change that.

She’s pro-life, like everyone else in this list. “Every life is blessed by God.”

She was accused of a lack of diversity in her cabinet in 2012.

In her book Can’t is Not an Option – My American Story. She calls Women and Minorities special interest groups saying, “You’re making promises to special-interest groups — women and minorities — that you expected to fulfill as governor.”
